Christmas is a widely celebrated festival which commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. The period incorporates various Christian and secular customs. Christmas Day, usually celebrated on the 25th day of December is a busy epoch, heralded with shopping and preparations for spirituality and a lot of funs.
As it were, during this period, people exchange gift items with their family members, loved ones and co-workers, as well as the needy. It used to be fun all the way, where most people, especially the Igbos living in different parts of the country and the world return home to share love and joy with their immediate and extended family members.
Succinctly, some communities use the period to settle quarrels in the respective families, perform both the traditional marriages and wedding ceremonies to enable every member of the family to attend. Due to some public holidays that follow the season, most people use this season to exchange visits to families, friends and well wishers, loved ones and colleagues.
On the other hand, some use this period to make silly mistakes of their lives; some get themselves impregnated. Some young people use the period to look for their would-be-wives or husbands; some use it to find new lovers whereas others use the yuletide to re-unite with their families and old friends who may be running away from performing their responsibilities.
Ironically, some people even deviate from the actual merriment associated with the season to dupe unsuspecting commuters eager to return home to see their family members. Transporters normally increase transport fares during this season while a slew of rituals take place by those who are eager to get rich by all means.
Friday magazine went to town and sought the opinion of different men on why they run away from their girlfriends during yuletide.
Mr. Gospel Amariamifeobu, a media practitioner said many men run away from their girlfriends because during festive periods like this, they try to shy away from their responsibilities. “Though I have not experienced it myself, sometimes it is as a result of not wanting to spend much on their girls in terms of clothing, and so many things that go with Christmas.
“Some of them will just instigate quarrel and before you know it, something that is not supposed to cause quarrel would happen in order to see reasons to separate from their girlfriends temporarily, so that after the Christmas and New Year celebrations, they will try to settle their differences, which is not the best. To me, it is not too good, because some people do it to shy away from their responsibilities. They are afraid of responsibilities.”
Mr. Fabian Ogbodo, a youth corps member is of the opinion that most times, men run away from their girlfriends because of the expenses that is involved. “Men have a lot of expenses to make during Christmas at home; so in order to meet up with the family’s expenses, they shy away from the responsibility they suppose to take with their girlfriends. Therefore, they do away with their girls and to reconcile after the Christmas season. Other things may be, if they find out that their girlfriends are pregnant, they will run away from them and there are other personal reasons they have too.”
Mr. Ubaka Okolie, an NGO member stated that he does not believe that men run away from their girlfriends during yuletide, although he had not witnessed it. But if they do, he said it may be because they know that their girlfriends are very high class ones, and that they may not be able to afford the girlfriends’ bills.
Mr. Austin Okorodudu, a journalist, said “You have to know on what foundation the relationship is built, because the truth remains that, having a boy friend or a girl friend does not just come like that; it comes with responsibility and you have to scale up the responsibility because your partner will want to buy one or two things.
“So, a lot of people might shy away; that is, after they have benefited from the person throughout the year, they tend to run away. I want to advise people that whatever you value, you must be able to finance. If you value any person you should be able to finance that person, so that is why I keep telling people who have chosen that way of life, may be having a girl friend or a boy friend, or a partner who they are close with.
“What they need to do is to make sure that on a constant basis they should rejuvenate the relationship. If it is a guy and you have a girl friend, she has to make her hair, she has to look good. Nothing is free. There is an adage that says “good soup na money kill am”; that is what we are talking about.”
Mr. Chijioke Oye, a civil servant said, “As Nigerians suffer insurgency from Boko Haram group in the country, men too suffer insurgency from women; that is, during Christmas period they try to adjust to their expenses.
“So, those of them who have numerous girlfriends will run away, and those who have girlfriends that are very exorbitant to maintain will run away. They will always look for the ones that are very cheap so that they can carry on with their financial obligation, but the subject of the matter is that the country is still suffering from a large number of unemployment cases. When we are employed, our men will enjoy the women.”
