British citizens can bring Non-EU family members back to UK so says court

The European Court of Justice has ruled British citizens should be able to bring non-EU family members into the UK without a travel visa.

It means the UK’s borders could be open to large numbers of foreign migrants from outside the European Union, and will intensify pressure on David Cameron to tackle freedom of movement rules.

The landmark ruling centres on the case of Sean McCarthy, who has dual British and Irish citizenship, and his Colombian wife Patricia McCarthy Rodriguez.
Mrs McCarthy Rodriguez, who has two children with her husband – both with British citizenship, had to get a “family permit” every six months to visit the UK with her family.

She and her husband took their case to court under the freedom of movement rules claiming she should be able to travel without the visa because she had an EU Residence Card issued by the Spanish government.

The European court has now ruled in the couple’s favour, saying the rules did not allow the British government to stop family members entering the country if they did not have a visa.

The Government said it was “disappointed” with the ruling.

The Prime Minister has come under increasing pressure to take on the EU over the impact of freedom of movement rules on immigration.

Last month he announced a block on EU migrants claiming welfare for the first four years after they arrive in the country, suggesting that if the EU blocked the move he would campaign for Britain to leave the union.

Responding to the European ruling, Conservative MEP Timothy Kirkhope, spokesman on justice and home affairs, said: “Of course the UK should have an immigration system which is fair, and does not disadvantage the right of British citizens to be with their family.

“However, we are disappointed with this judgment as we believe that the UK’s visa system is both fair and lawful, and does an important job in meeting this country’s migration needs.

“Britain will always be best placed to decide and deal with its own immigration needs – not a judge in Luxembourg.”

UKIP MEP and spokesman on immigration Steven Woolfe said: “This ruling extends the so-called ‘right to free movement’ to millions of people from anywhere in the world who don’t have citizenship of any country of the EU.

“This is yet more proof that Britain can never take back control of its borders as long as it remains in the European Union.”

Things You Must NEVER Do Immediately After Sex

Sex is about two adults who have mutual agreement to come together but that’s not just all about it!

1. Rushing to the bathroom
Getting up and rushing to the bathroom just after making love is a terrible idea. Most people go to the bathroom to check their appearance, brush their teeth or take a shower. It is understandable that you want to be clean but sometimes just lying in the bed with your partner is much more intimate.

2. Unhygienic action
Lovemaking is an act in which you share your privacy with your partner; still there are limits. Scratching or picking your nose or passing gas in not at all funny. One must maintain certain etiquette even in their closest moments together.

3. Checking your mobile
Almost everyone does it. Checking your phone just after making love makes your partner feel neglected. We know your time is valuable and you need to stay connected to the world, but the intimate moment with your partner is also a precious one, respect that.

4. Dressing to leave
You are done and you are moving on, certainly it means lovemaking was just another task on your mind. You may be getting late for work but a minute of togetherness when you look into your partners eyes and bond at an emotional level goes a long way in your relationship.

5. Saying how good you were
You need not toot your own horn. You may feel that you were “superhuman” in bed today but saying that makes it cringe-worthy. It is better to compliment your partner, and if she/he feels you were good they will certainly say so.

6. Turning on the TV
Listening to the problems of the free world or catching the latest score just after some great love making may seem to be a very relaxing and luxurious idea but actually it is not. It shows your insensitivity towards the intimacy you just shared. If you have to watch TV, select something both of you can watch together.

7. Not cuddling
Some people just roll over and go to sleep after making love. It is better to cuddle and show your love and affection to each other. Look into each other’s eyes and relax in your partner’s arms. This is a great moment to bond and have a romantic conversation about your love, dreams and life.
Yes, these are the seven things that you should not be doing after making love. Don’t repeat these mistakes, to enjoy a great lovemaking experience, and much more!

3 Gays Arrested In Gambia Face Life Imprisonment

Gambian authorities arrested 3 men allegedly involved in homosexual relationships.

In the worst case the suspects now face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, under the new law signed in October, Reuters reports with reference to the local TV station.

After the arrest all the men were said to have confessed to being gay.

Speaking on the issue for the camera, the masked security said:

“We go around in search of suspected individuals and in the course of the investigations we arrested the men and they have confessed that they have engaged in these inhuman acts.”

It would be recalled that before homosexuality became legally punishable in Gambia, the country’s President Yahya Jammeh described homosexual persons as “vermin” and suggested to deal with them like with mosquitoes.

The move was met with shock by the international community. The European Union said this month it has withdrawn millions of euros of funding from Gambia.

Another African leader, Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan, signed the anti-gay bill in Janury, 2014. However the law stipulated for a milder punishment, in comparison with Gambia, which is maximum 14 years.

Jonathan’s move was also seriously criticized from abroad, the top politicians characterized it as human’s rights violation.

BUHARI LOYALISTS AFTER MY LIFE – SHEIKH GUMI

  • Says APC, PDP dominated by Christians
  • Cautions against violence in 2015 elections

Renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has alleged threats to his life and family by supporters of All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, for daring to criticise him.
The Kaduna-based scholar, who spoke on burning national issues, said although the 2015 general elections was not a religious struggle, the APC and the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP were dominated by Christians.
Sheikh Gumi warned both Christians and Muslims not to resort to violence during and after the 2015 general elections and expressed faith in the ability and willingness of God to bring the country out of the polls stronger and more united.
In a Facebook post yesterday, which he titled: “PDP vs APC: It’s not about religion,” Sheikh Gumi said his children had received several threat calls from Buhari’s supporters who use unknown telephone numbers to call them.
According to him, “People like me who had all along been critical about the government can longer speak or express personal opinion if it is not in support of Gen. Buhari. Just this morning around 2.30am (yesterday) my three male children individually got threatening phone calls from a private number. People can vote for whoever they choose whether a Christian or a Muslim.”
Last October, Gumi had in a separate Facebook posts appealed to both President Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Buhari not to contest the 2015 presidential election to avoid throwing the country into avoidable crisis.
He had also faulted the choice of a lawyer and pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Prof Yemi Osinbajo as Buhari’s running mate.
On the 2015 elections, Gumi, in the latest Facebook post, said: “Surely there is religion in politics and politics in religion. However, the 2015 elections is between PDP vs APC and is not about religion. It’s a time bomb and God is not the author of mischief. Security members have clamped down on APC members and taken away their computers, while some irate youths are threatening the lives of PDP members with their families in the North. PDP posters are vandalised in some places.
“People like me who had been all along critical about the government dare speak or express my own personal opinion if it’s not in support of Gen. Buhari. They assume one must have been bribed or is a PDP agent”, he lamented.
He said that those who sent threatening phone calls from private numbers to his three sons were Hausa speakers, adding that, “already a ‘cult’ is being formed.”
Sheikh Gumi noted that such actions were harbingers of what would happen when one of the contestants is declared loser.
He expressed fears that with intimidation from both sides, a truly free and fair election would be an illusion, stressing that, “Yet it’s the only one eye we have so we have to do with the cake half-baked.
“What is now paramount and of highest priority is peace and stability. Every life must be protected; minorities- Muslims and Christians- should be secured also, without putting an extra burden on the already exhausted military and police.
“It’s good that both presidential candidates of the PDP and APC have re-emphasised that the 2015 presidential contest is not a religious one. The two parties have also reiterated the same. Therefore, the 2015 elections is not a Crusade vs Jihad and consequently there is no martyrdom. The only ethical obligation on the clergy of both religions, Christians and Muslims, is to explain it to their congregations to avoid violence.
“Nigeria doesn’t need another religiously tainted war. The Boko Haram has already tormented all, he said, adding that the “APC was ‘demonised’ by elements in PDP as a ‘Janjaweed’ party to the extent that they were pushed to take a pastor instead of a nominal Christian as their vice presidential candidate. This in turn has nationally brought another dangerous innovation and dimension into the dirty game of power struggle.
“Now men of religion will surely be messed up and ‘dirtied’. Next as Muslims become sensitised too, a Sheikh will soon be on the list and a U-turn to another religious conflict - interfaith and extra-faith will ensue. Thanks to the recklessness of both parties that have proven no matter what they claim; are still self-centered and egocentric.”
He continued: “The choice of a pastor to deputise for Gen. Buhari is meant to shake to the core the Christians who were made to see the candidate as a religious fanatic and also the Muslims alike who saw the General as having some Islamic aura. It should then effectively neutralise the ‘demonisation’ of PDP as a Christian party. It’s now the Church, not just Christians that have a foot engrossed in APC. A privilege the Muslim cannot be said to enjoy in any of the two parties.
“Therefore, both parties are a group of Nigerian Muslims and Christian’s joined together for a common goal. Each with its winning slogan and strategy! Each can only promote his/her religion on personal basis but the union is purely secular and worldly. The essence of our democratic union,” Gumi said.
He appealed to Nigerians not to demonise any Muslim or Christian for joining any of the parties. Gumi charged Muslims and Christians to freely choose which party they like without any compromise on their religious obligations, asserting that,” It’s a matter of mundane desires and preferences. No party is holy or is holding brief for the Almighty God.”
“Therefore, you as a voter, take all precautionary steps, legal and practical, to vote and protect your rights. But never resort to violence. As for Islam which I speak for, since there are Muslims on both sides, any Muslim who will kill or die fighting another Muslim will be condemned to hell for eternity. Likewise, whoever that will also kill another non-Muslim Nigerian because of the constitutional treaty of peaceful coexistence among Nigerians will not smell the fragrance of paradise.”
Gumi lamented that Nigeria’s democracy had been unconstitutionally raped repeatedly by the military might and polls rigging, “yet your civility, patience and prayers had always been our only remedy and the strength of our unity. Therefore, don’t kill or expose yourself to political violence for naught. This world is going to end. And the day you die, you will only be judged by divine ruling not by the Nigerian Supreme Court decisions.
“Whoever calls you out to violence; ask him to show up himself and his children first. This way we can altogether avoid post-election violence, chaos and anarchy,” he stated.

House-To-House Campaign Group Dumps Jonathan For Buhari

The House-to-House campaign organization that helped Goodluck Jonathan advance for the 2011 elections, made choice in favour of his rival, Muhammadu Buhari, ahead of the 2015 polls.

According to Sahara Reporters, the group reasoned their decision by the fact that Jonathan had demonstrated poor performance and inability to manage corruption in the country.

The National Coordinator of the House-to-House Political Education Initiative, Kunle Ehinlanwo, said this as he briefed journalists in Abuja.

The official dislcosed that first they planned to support the Incumbent President thinking that stability would secure democracy. However soon they concluded, based on the careful review and analysis, that the situation in the country needs to be changed.

“We have consequently decided to throw our support in favour of General Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who we are convinced is a better man for the challenging job.”

Tight security heralds Christmas celebrations

A near watertight security network was introduced in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT and other states of the federation by the military, police and other security agencies to ensure a hitch-free Christmas celebration tomorrow.

As early as 6am yesterday, soldiers, policemen and men of the Nigerian Security Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, had taken strategic positions on major roads in Abuja and other state capitals. Policemen also mounted checkpoints on inter-state routes such as the Kaduna-Abuja-Lokoja Road, Abuja-Keffi Highway and other major routes.

In the FCT, soldiers and policemen stood guard at major busstops in Berger, Wuse, Jabi Park, Federal Secretariat and other spots. They carried out stop-and-search on motorists and frisked residents, especially those with luggage.

In Maiduguri, Borno State, the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army announced a five-day restrict on vehicular movements to check the activities of Boko Haram terrorists during the Christmas celebration.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Director Army Public Relations Officer, Col. Sani Usman, he said the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maiduguri in consultation with the Borno State government and other security agencies has banned all forms of vehicular movement in the state from 6pm today till 7am on Sunday, December 28, 2014.

He however said the ban excludes vehicles on essential services such as medical and fire services and the media.

Usman said the measure became necessary to safeguard the life and property of law abiding Nigerians in the state.

Meanwhile, the Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mr. Isa Chonoko, has urged managers of motor parks across Nigeria to engage in proper checks in and around their locations to avoid any unforeseen incidents during the Yuletide.

He gave the charge in Abuja at a sensitisation forum to draw attention to possible dangers at the motor parks following the influx of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs into Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Chonoko noted that it was the end of the year again and “most Nigerians in their usual nature would travel out of their stations using various means of transportation in order to celebrate the holidays with loved ones,” adding that most commercial road trips are embarked upon from the motor parks.

He said that the recent influx of the IDPs into the city had heightened fears among residents and travelers, adding that NEMA have told the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC and other security agencies to educate commercial drivers on proper and adequate security checks in and around the motor parks.

“Garages, shopping malls are highly vulnerable to being attacked by these insurgents so that was what informed our decision to sensitise the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW executives on the need to keep their environment in order especially in the area of security,” he said.

Fuel queues persist in Abuja

Fuel queues have resurfaced in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT and its environs four days after the suspension of the strike embarked upon by members of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG and Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN.

The oil and gas workers embarked on the strike on Monday, December 16, 2014 to draw the attention of the government to the anti-labour practices by the major oil companies.

Residents of the FCT who trooped to major busstops to board vehicles to motor parks for trips to other parts of the country were stranded as taxi drivers queued at filling stations to buy fuel. Most of the filling stations in the City Centre and the satellite towns were shut.

The only few stations which dispensed products to motorists were jam-packed by anxious residents leading to queues stretching to the streets and roads. The development led to traffic snarl on the affected routes.

A taxi driver, Mr. Ikenna Obi, who runs the Wuse-Berger route in the Central Area District, said he was shocked to see fuel queues return to Abuja after the oil and gas workers had suspended their strike.

Obi said: “It was like a film to me when some filling stations refused to dispense fuel to customers on Monday for reasons they failed to disclose to us. I thought we have passed the era of recurring fuel scarcity at Christmas season. This practice is not good for our people, especially at this period of insecurity.

“Many people, both private and commercial vehicle owners now spend hours in filling stations to just buy fuel. We plead with whosoever is concerned to sheathe their sword and save Nigerians the problem of sleeping in filling stations to buy fuel.”

Another driver who plies Ahmadu Bello Expressway said he was left with no choice than to increase transport fare from the usual N50 to N70, and in some cases N100 to meet with the cost buying fuel from black marketers.

A fuel attendant at a Total filling station in Wuse, said that “we don’t even know the cause of the sudden fuel scarcity. It was on Friday morning that we got the good news that NUPENG and PENGASSAN have suspended their warning strike, resulting in the availability of the product, but suddenly on Monday, something happened that our ‘Ogas’ asked us not to sell the product to customers for reasons best known to them. I hope we will overcome it soon,” she said.

Some commuters told Nigerian Pilot that they were disappointed with the inability of government to resolve the industrial issues between the government and the labour unions.

Mrs. Ifeyinwa Nweke, a civil servant, whose office is located at Wuse 2, said she paid double of what she used to pay to work.

“This was apart from several hours that I stood at the bus stop in Kubwa waiting for a vehicle heading my way. The worst is that my brother just called me this morning (yesterday) that transport company operators have increased the fare to Owerri, this was apart from the normal Christmas transport fare increase. I wonder how Nigerians will celebrate this Christmas with this situation,” she lamented.

Vellvet Lounge Is The Place To Hangout This Christmas!

1After European colonization, different tribes in the country become more united than ever before. The largest political unit was the village group who shared a common market, meeting place and common beliefs and cults. These village groups were ruled by a council of elder age grades, lineage heads and influential wealthy men.

For centuries, different group of individuals such as the men folks, the women folks and the youths group who formed into age grades have played (and still do) an important role in village life. Age grades are formed by people born within three to five years from each other, and are a means to create a peer group, foster unity and responsibility, acting mainly as a socio-cultural institution. Communities are segmented in different age grades, and with years passing by, the younger groups ascend the ladder and take over the role of older grades.

As it were, Christmas season is being viewed as the best time for people, especially women meet to discuss major issues affecting the entire village, and the women at the end of the day place the issue on a ballot to be voted upon. And any issue recently enacted by the Village women was to be a Home Rule Community. This is because most people return home for the Christmas celebration and the opportunity is being used to drive home peace and unity of a particular town or village.

2
However, Mrs. Kate Ekwu a Banker said she was looking forward towards this year’s Christmas meetings because they want to inspire each other, try new things, learn new things, develop and share information with each other. This is a time when friendships and relationships are important.

Mrs. Okwy Emeka hair dresser, said she like the Christmas meeting because it is not only the time to discuss on the development of the community but also the time to chat the way forward for the family. “I so much enjoy as a woman to be in the midst of my co-women to discuss issues that will positively affect our lives. In doing that Christmas is the perfect time set aside for family members, relations to come together to celebrate together, so Christmas is the best time for women meeting. I urge the women leaders across the country to come together to change this meeting from August to Christmas period”.

4
Whereas Mrs. Joy Okolobia a market woman averred that she has bought several clothes that would enable her to walk gorgeously into the meeting to be able to command respect from her fellow women. She said she has made her hair, would do manicure and pedicure, bought different types of shoe to match, and now waiting for the meeting day to come up.

Also, Mrs. Eucharia Adebayo a Civil Servant said; I am having a serious issue to be discussed at the village meeting during the Christmas and I hope that it will be solved. So I am looking forward to that day when my worries will be removed from me, because I believe that a problem solved inspire adequate peace of mind.

6
Mrs. Gladys Azukaego a Public Servant opined; you know, I don’t have the time traveling home at ordinary time due to the nature of my job, but at Christmas, I have the time, so I have been preparing to see my fellow women who I had not seen for long because the village meeting affords us opportunity of meeting people you have not seen since the last Christmas period.

Mrs. Lucy Nwanma Market woman, stated; I feel disturbed having series of meetings during the Christmas season, because as a market woman, i use the Christmas celebration to have rest. But now i cannot have rest at all.

Mrs. Josephine Oghene a Tailor said; I prefer attending meetings during the Christmas celebration than in the month of August because August meeting is only for three days, but Christmas meetings last for one week or more and within that time I use it to rest for the year. So I am anxiously looking forward for that day to come, having gathered foodstuffs, clothing and others that will help me during the days of the meeting.

Palm Oil Production At A Local Factory.

Palm oil is a red oil extracted from the outer covering of the palm kernel fruit.

It has its origin in West Africa and has been produced and consumed in the region for centuries.

Palm oil is one of the most common products used by almost everybody in Nigeria. It is the most consumed edible oil worldwide, as it is a popular food ingredient in Africa and some parts of Asia (such as in Malaysia and Indonesia).

Apart from being a popular ingredient in African food (especially soups, stews and pottage), palm oil has one of the most versatile uses of any plant product. The global palm oil market is worth hundreds of millions of dollars every year.

              Palm-Oil-production-5

Until the early part of the 20th century, palm oil was processed only by traditional methods where loose fruits were collected from the ground or a few bunches were cut from the tree. From the 1920s however, experimentation began with steam cookers and hand presses designed to make production at the village level more efficient in terms of labor use and oil yield.

                  Palm-Oil-production-1

Virgin red palm oil is traditionally made by being hand-pressed, without the use of extreme heat or any chemicals. This allows it to maintain the natural nutrients of carotenes and the tocopherols and tocotrienols (Vitamin E).

In recent decades, the rapid increase in palm oil production has resulted in large factory settings, where the oil is refined. RBD (refined, bleached, deodorized) palm oil has the nutrients stripped, resulting in a different taste, colour and nutrition profile of the oil.

Nigeria Builds World's Biggest Bottle Tree.

Nigeria has broken world record by building the world’s largest bottle tree, introduced December.

World biggest bottle tree has been built in Nigeria. Credits: Premium Times
The previous record was set by China that used 1,000 beer bottles.

Nigeria’s super tree is also made of empty beer bottles and it is located along the Eko Atlantic stretch in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The officials who unveiled the tree said that Guiness Book representatives were informed and would soon do the counting to formally register the record.

How to keep the flame burning in marital relationship

Nowadays, we often hear cases of broken relationships. Husbands and wives divorce on a daily basis over trivial issues. The trend has put many families in shambles. Some analysts are of the view that conflict is part of human nature and the inability of most people in relationship to manage conflict metamorphoses to the rampant cases of divorce and broken relationship. However, there are ways relationships can be maintained and sustained devoid of these challenges.

Most relationships have crumbled because of lack of gratitude. Gratitude is an antidote in keeping your relationship flourishing. Words of appreciation and affirmation are very necessary in a relationship/marriage. ‘Thank you’ works wonders in the hearts of spouses. Learn to appreciate little kindness done to you by your spouse. It does not matter how big or little the act of kindness. It is the thoughtfulness in the heart of the person expressing it that matters so much. Please try to always voice out your praises and appreciation because spoken words are powerful. An anonymous philosopher once said, ‘while some bad words can come like the piercing of sword on someone’s heart and be like rain falling on a parched ground.

People should realise that, they have an indispensable contributions to make in the lives of others around him. Husbands take for granted their unappreciative wives and vice verse. When appreciation is lacking in a relationship/marriage, each of them starts craving for appreciation outside and this brings about misunderstanding. There is cordiality and brightness about husbands and wives who create opportunities to recognise their spouses’ attractiveness and their faithfulness at least to some extent may pay off to sit and ask yourself what ten things your spouse has done in the past week to make life different and enjoyable.

Note that, the keeping of secrets about weaknesses and problems facing your relationship/marriage are equally important. Appreciation is important in a relationship. Appreciate the odd jobs your partner did in the house and compliment his/her accomplishments; or when your partner makes a special effort to do favours for another, it should be appreciated first before you can go further to understand what is behind the favour.

Gratitude seems to stimulate the life force of a relationship/marriage and keeps life moving. Also, endeavour to be sincere in showing appreciation. Appreciation motivates spouses to be responsible and to succeed in their ambition. It helps them to remain stable, faithful and loving to each other. It can keep back the skip in their eyes, and the determination in their hearts.

Cares and soft touches have an important role to play, sustaining a relationship/marriage. This is not necessary contact but movements that bring a couple/spouse into intimate circle no one else is allowed to enter. You need touch, and care for each other. Some are alone in their relationship/marriage; in the sense that, their lover has lost all desire for caring and touch. The holding of hands while walking down the streets, sometimes speaks many things about the relationship. If you start the day on good footing, it can keep the whole day sweet and fresh.

More so, spouses have emotional needs, they each need, which most spouses fail to recognise.

Wives need to hear tender words from their husbands. Just as sharing exiting moment together is very necessary. For the wife, love means a permanent, high level of affection. To be tender is to ask your partner/spouse how she wishes to be loved instead of loving her the way that is convenient to you. A social commentator was said and I quote, “Tenderness is the sensitivity one undertakes when one asks oneself what will make her feel high today. Do not dwell on assumption or act according to your own instinct. Find out what she wants and just give her that. When couples express tender loving care to each other through physical touches, it adds more life and excitement to their love making and it makes it flow naturally. They do not need to appeal to each other before they can have a good time. With this practice, their hearts and emotion are always glued together.

You have to cuddle your relationship/marriage for it to keep going. Try to read the body language of your partner always because it has a lot to do in terms of discussions and dealings with him/her. Your partner may be going through emotional trauma which he /she may want to keep secret, but the way you handle him/her may calm the situation.

In all, be kind to your partner because action speaks volumes. If you truly love your spouse, you need to show it in the little things you do to alleviate their pain and make life sweeter to them. Help each other out in terms needs. There is a story of two love birds; one was in the bush and the other on the tree by the roadside. The one in the bush was calling out to the one on the roadside saying, “I love you” repeatedly, and the one on the road responded, “show it”. This underscores that love needs to be expressed not only with words, but even more actions.

Finally, make time to listen to your partner/ soul mate. Learn to listen to her not only words but her heart. On the other hand, it is necessary that you welcome your husband with enthusiasm. This makes the man understands that, he is the king of the house. Spouses should be able to understand what interest their partner.

A psychologist, Mr. Edeh Nwokoporo explained that, relationship works in the minds. According to him, when the minds of the two parties in a relationship cannot understand each other at every point in time, they hardly work in harmony. They will always find fault on actions and activities of each other.

“For a marriage/ relationship to be successful, it needs efforts and contribution of the two the partners. Their minds must work together to achieve cordiality. Some relationships break because of lack of compromise. There must be compromise between couples/spouses for the relationship to flourish,” he said.

Mr. Nwokporo however, admitted that, no relationship can ever exist without misunderstanding/conflict; but how It is handled is the utmost importance. He frowned at the situation where people bring third parties to their love lives. He noted that, what kill relationship mostly is a third party, which according to him might be their parents, neighbours or friends, etc.

2015: Kumuyi Has A Message For Nigerians.

Pastor William Kumuyi, the General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, said Nigeria would overcome its challenges.

According to him, God would pull the country through peacefully and successfully as it prepares for the forthcoming general elections in 2015.

In a press statement signed on his behalf by the Church’s Secretary, Pastor Jerry Asemota, which formally announced the National 2014 December Retreat and monthly revival programmes with the themes: ‘Lifted Up to Higher Ground’ and ‘Enrichment Through God’s Visitation,’ Kumuyi said God has a plan for this country.

He therefore urged Nigerians to have no fear about the coming year and the turbulence that accompanies elections.

APC HUMBLES GOV AMAECHI

Names him campaign manager

All Progressives Congress, APC yesterday added to the woes of Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, when the opposition party gave him the consolatory job of a campaign manager.

Governor Amaechi had sacrificed a lot for the party with the expectation of being rewarded with the vice presidential candidate slot, but was dumped for former Lagos State Attorney-General, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, who the party’s presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, unveiled on Wednesday in Abuja as his running mate.

In a statement yesterday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, named Governor Amaechi, as the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation.

Mohammed said the announcement followed the hugely successful convention at which Gen. Buhari was democratically elected, and the follow-up successful choice of his running mate, Prof. Osinbajo.

The party described the director-general position as “the most important task in the quest for positive change in Nigeria,” and said the Rivers governor was considered for the position because of his love for the country, principle, strength of character, decency and his administrative acumen.

It boasted that in the run-up to who would be Gen. Buhari’s running mate, the party had a plethora of credible candidates but went for a man it adjudged as having a greater pedigree.

Mohammed said: “With a presidential candidate that has rekindled the hopes of the citizenry and revived their belief in democratic ideals, we believe we must also choose a running mate that will complement the sterling qualities of the presidential candidate. We must confess that the choice was a tough one, considering the array of eminently-qualified and outstanding candidates that we had to choose from.

“Yes, we were spoilt for choice but, in the end, we picked as running mate, a man whose pedigree, nationally, sub-regionally, regionally and globally, attests to the fact that our party, the APC, is a repository of high quality leadership materials, and that our country, Nigeria, has no shortage of the very best human resources,” the party said.

Governor Amaechi was in the forefront of the campaign for Gen. Buhari’s emergence as the presidential candidate of the APC with the unwritten understanding that he would be compensated with the running mate slot. That was not to be as leaders of the party blocked every move made by the governors backing Amaechi for office. This did not go down well with some of his supporters, but there are indications that the dissatisfied governor might have been offered some juicy promises should APC win next year’s presidential election.

Nigerian Pilot learnt that it was on the strength of those promises that he accepted to work as the party’s presidential campaign organisation boss. But there are also fears that if the owners of the party renege on initial promise made to him, how feasible can this one be, even as Tinubu had already described him and other defected Peoples Democratic Party, PDP governors and members as strangers in the opposition party.

Buhari/Osinbajo Will Eliminate Corruption - Fashola & Ashafa

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) and Senator Gbenga Ashafa, who represents the Lagos East Senatorial District, have saluted the choice of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as running mate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

Both of them stated that the combination will help eradicate corruption in the country.

According to The Nation, Governor Fashola spoke at the swearing in ceremony of three High Court Judges of Lagos State held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.

Addressing the gathering comprising of judges, lawyers, traditional rulers, religious leaders, relatives of the newly sworn in judges and well-wishers, Gov. Fashola described Osinbajo as the brain behind the transformation of the state judiciary.

He said: “Prof. Osinbajo has contributed tremendously to the state judiciary, the vision of building an efficient and incorruptible judiciary started under his watch as the Attorney General of Lagos State. So as I wish my brother and friend Prof. Yemi Osinbajo the very best in the journey.”

Ashafa said that the combination of Gen. Buhari and Prof. Osinbajo would eradicate corruption which has eaten deep into the nation’s fabric.

“The duo of Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo is the real change that we are talking about. That is the hope that Nigerians, especially the youths have been crying for. I’m telling you without any iota of doubt that the two of them will rescue Nigerians and Nigerians should be ready to embrace a brighter rewarding future and the only way to do this is to shine their eyes and ensure they vote against the tyranny of the PDP,” the Senator said.

However, the first attacks on the credibility of the APC presidential candidate, Buhari, have started. A Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Reuben Abati,

Scramble as 4 parties meet INEC’s deadline on candidates’ list

Ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP, All Progressives Congress, APC, National Conscience Party, NCP and United Progressive Party, UPP were among political parties which met yesterday’s deadline for parties to submit the names of their presidential candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Nigerian Pilot learnt that while PDP submitted the names of President Goodluck Jonathan and his running mate, Vice President Namadi Sambo, the APC presented Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as his running mate.

For the NCP, founded by that late activist lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Engr. Martin Onovo, is its presidential candidate while the UPP submitted Chief Chekwas Okorie as its standard bearer.

According to section 3 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended), political parties are obliged to submit the names of their candidates to INEC not later than 60 days before the election.

However, as at the time of filing this report, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, could not ascertain the number of political parties which met the deadline.

He simply stated that political parties had been responding.

Meanwhile, the national secretariat of the PDP, yesterday witnessed a beehive of activities as the party leaders rushed to put finishing touches to the list of its presidential and National Assembly candidates.

Some party members who are apprehensive of the names of winners of the primaries laid siege to the office to monitor the list that was sent to INEC.

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, was one of the leaders of the party who had a closed-door meeting with the PDP leadership, few hours to the close of submission of list of candidates.

Governor Dickson spent about one hour in the office of the national chairman before he left and declined to speak with journalists on his mission at the secretariat.

There were two primaries for various positions in Bayelsa state.

Another high profile member of the party noticed at the secretariat was chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Andy Uba, who met some national officers of the PDP behind closed-doors.

According to INEC regulations, the parties have up to January 14, 2015 to make substitutions in their candidates’ lists.

Last night, INEC disclosed that it had shifted the deadline for the submission of Governorships and State Assemblies candidates’ forms from December 25 to December 26, 2014.

Idowu, who disclosed this to newsmen in Abuja, said the Commission adjusted the date because it falls on Christmas Day, December 25.

He however maintained that the December 18 (yesterday) deadline for the submission of Presidential and the National Assembly forms by political parties remained valid, stressing that the Commission would not extend the date for any political party which fails to submit by 8pm.

He said: “For the Presidential and National Assemblies elections deadline is Wednesday, December 18, by 8 pm for the submission of form CF001 and CF002.”

Idowu declined comment on the number of political parties which had submitted or yet to summit their presidential candidates forms.

“Even by tomorrow (Friday) you may not likely get the information from INEC because, the law provides that what is being submitted today must be officially published on December 25.

“It also provides that whatever names submitted for governorship and state houses of assemblies election, on December 26, 2014 should be officially published on the January 1, 2015.’’

He added that there was a constitutionals provision for the withdrawal of candidates but the person who is nominated to INEC has to write and sign that he or she is withdrawing from this race.

Plot to attack worship centres, others at Yuletide uncovered

Federal Government yesterday alerted Nigerians of plots by insurgents to attack churches, mosques and other public places during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

It therefore appealed to citizens to be security conscious and cooperate with security operatives to make the Yuletide period safe for them.

Coordinator of the National Information Centre, NIC, Mr. Mike Omeri, revealed the insurgents’ plots in Abuja yesterday at the weekly security press briefing.

Omeri said: “As year 2014 gradually comes to an end, Nigerians have been warned to be very security conscious, especially during the end of the year festivities. Already, security agencies have been intimated of plans by insurgents to carry out major attacks against soft targets. These soft targets include motor parks, churches, schools, mosques, recreational centres such as amusement parks and viewing centres.”

He said the aim of the terrorists is to exploit the festive period with the attendant mass gatherings for religious programmes, school end-of-year parties and family picnics to cause large-scale destruction of lives and property.

“Consequently, security agencies have been directed to beef up surveillance in such locations around the country. Citizens will have also noticed the increased presence of policemen deployed in various locations for their safety. They are therefore advised to exercise a high level of vigilance and cooperate with security agencies in a bid to ensure a hitch-free yuletide.”

On the rescue of Chibok schoolgirls after six months of their abduction by Boko Haram terrorists, Omeri said the government was relentless in its commitment to the search and rescue of the girls and all persons in one form of captivity or the other.

He said: “In this regard, the government has not given up and will not give up in the search and rescue effort as can be evidenced in the ongoing arrest and investigation of all leads and trials. In addition, the government wishes to reassure Nigerians of its resolve to adequately protect all citizens in the face of the current security challenges and, therefore, will spare no action in ensuring the amelioration of the current situation, including the provision of relief materials for internally displaced persons.”

Omeri, who is also Director-General of National Orientation Agency, NOA, admitted that it is difficult to rescue the Chibok girls due to the fact that the military troops are conscious of casualties that may be recorded during offensive attacks on the insurgents.

“Our desire is to rescue these girls alive. Don’t forget that you are meeting people who are not reasonable. People who are committed to dying, they are not guided by any laws or rules of engagement. These are the challenges that we are facing but we will not giving up until we cannot search anymore” Omeri said.

The centre also said the seven fake Boko Haram negotiators paraded before journalists on Tuesday by the Department of State Service, DSS, and who were working with self-styled negotiator and Australian national, Steven Davis, were the brains behind several of the video clips being circulated by mischievous persons on the current condition in the country.

“It is also evident that the recent actions and comments of some highly placed Nigerians are founded on the activities of these mischievous persons who are part of a well orchestrated plan to spread falsehood, undermine and discredit government’s efforts at ending terrorism and also instill fear in the populace,” he said.

Spokeswoman of the DSS, Ms. Marilyn Ogar, denied torturing of any of the seven suspects, who confessed to spreading falsehood and indicting ex-Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff and former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika as sponsors of Boko Haram.

“None of the suspects was tortured as it was evidenced when you interacted with them. You did not see any of them with brushes and wounds to indicate torture. Nigerian security forces don’t use inhuman treatment to get information.”

MASSOB Dares Nigerian Authorities

Arms proliferation and African security

Recently, a key issue relating to political and internal security of Africa was on the table. At the international circle, more countries signed Arms Trade Treaty which is expected to come into force at the end of the year
The issue of arms proliferation and security of the African continent is an urgent one and the steps being taken so far are worthwhile. Seven more countries recently ratified the Arms Trade Treaty thus bringing the overall total to over 50 and triggering the countdown to entry into force.
Fifty states are required to ratify the treaty before the 90-day countdown to entry into force could begin. On September 25, seven states including, Argentina, The Bahamas, The Czech Republic, St Lucia, Portugal, Senegal, and Uruguay ratified at a special ceremony at the United Nations headquarters, in New York, taking the number of ratifying states to 52.
Campaigners hailed the day as a historic moment and said that the first 50 states to ratify had shown political leadership and strength in ensuring the treaty will enter into force on December 24, 2014 - only 18 months since it first opened for signature, in June 2013. Two more states - Georgia and Namibia - will also sign the treaty today, bringing the overall total number of signatories to 121.
The time to change the arms trade for good has arrived. Arms and Conflict Policy Advisor at Oxfam Martin Butcher said: “Momentum behind the Arms Trade Treaty is continuing at a rapid pace now as we approach the moment the treaty will enter into force. The ATT will enshrine into international law much-needed controls on the multi-billion-dollar arms trade for the very first time”, he said.
The unregulated arms trade has catastrophic results. He further said that, “Civilians have been paying too high a price for the lack of global arms controls which have permitted arms and ammunition to be legally transferred into the hands of dictators and warlords. But the game is up now - those days are over. Now governments have the chance to change the arms trade for good, and if rigorously implemented this treaty will save lives”, he added.
The ATT is the first global agreement to regulate the $85bn annual trade in arms and ammunition.
Every day, up to 2000 people are killed by armed violence and millions more live in fear of rape, assault and displacement caused by weapons getting into the wrong hands. Figures released by the UN’s refugee agency UNHCR showed more than 50m people were forced to flee their homes across the world during 2013.
Heavy scrutiny is also on the source of weapons being used in conflicts around the globe, for example in South Sudan, Syria, Iraq and Israel/Palestine.
Growing interest is focused on where Islamic State (IS) fighters are getting their weapons, particularly because their supply appears to be fuelled by the diversion of arms and ammunition from legal custody i.e. state - owned into illicit hands. Data released earlier this month by Conflict Armament Research showed US - manufactured small arms were being used on the battlefield by IS fighters as well as Chinese-manufactured M80 general-purpose machine guns.
Under the ATT, states must assess the risks of weapons and ammunition being misused to commit human rights abuses or violations of humanitarian law, before they can authorize transfer.
Next challenge: its implementation. Once the treaty enters into force, the next major challenge will be to ensure the treaty - which sets new international law - is implemented robustly.
Important operational questions over the implementation of the treaty have yet to be finalised and the Control Arms Coalition is calling on all States who have ratified the Treaty to make fast progress on the mechanics of how the treaty will be applied in real-life situations.
The debate continues on where the ATT’s official Secretariat will be based - with the governments of Austria, Switzerland and Trinidad and Tobago all having made a bid to host it.
Campaigners say the more countries that sign and ratify the treaty, the better. In particular, they encourage African States, who played a big part in Treaty negotiations, and whose leaders have often called for a halt to the flood of weapons into the continent to ratify the ATT.
Reaching the landmark figure of 50 has been welcomed by campaigners all over the world - particularly in countries affected by armed violence and states where irresponsible weapons trading has cost lives.
Africa is the most affected continent. Control Arms Coalition member Nounou Booto-Meeti, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, said: “Guns are used to inspire fear, then to control and then to kill. This pattern of violence sickens me and I have seen too many lives devastated across Africa by armed violence.
“Tight regulations control the international trade of agricultural produce but, until now, weapons and bullets could be transferred from across borders with few questions asked.
“We have waited too long for the Arms Trade Treaty but now we have just 90 days to go before it becomes international law. We call on states to show continued commitment and determination and ensure the ATT is robustly implemented so it is used effectively to reduce violence in conflict zones all over the world”, he said.
Control Arms Coalition research shows the ATT is one of the fastest arms agreements to move towards entry into force. Progress on the ratification of the ATT can be compared with that of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which opened for signature in January 1993. A total of 126 states signed at that time.
Sixty five signatures were needed to trigger EIF and the 65th ratification happened almost four years after the convention opened for signature. By that time, there were 165 signatures. allafrica.com.
