More coffee may lower your odds for diabetes
Abuja - Drinking more coffee might lower your risk for type 2 diabetes, a new large US study suggests.
People who boosted their daily java intake by more than one cup over four years reduced their diabetes risk, while adults who drank less coffee in that time frame saw their odds for diabetes rise, the study of over 123 000 adults found.
"It looks like there is a dose-response relationship between increasing coffee consumption and a lower risk of diabetes," said lead researcher Dr Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.
"Basically, the more coffee, the lower the risk of diabetes," Hu said. "People who drink three to five cups of coffee a day enjoyed a significant reduction in type 2 diabetes risk."
Antioxidants and other nutrients
However, people can drink too much coffee, particularly those who don't respond well to caffeine, Hu cautioned. Caffeine, a stimulant, keeps some people awake, and can also cause the heart to speed up.
"It's hard to pinpoint which components of coffee may contribute to a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes," Hu said. "Current thinking is that it is the combination of antioxidants and other nutrients in coffee that are responsible for a lower risk of developing diabetes."
The study, published online in Diabetologia, shows an association between more coffee and lower diabetes risk but can't actually prove that one causes the other, Hu said.
However, experiments in animals and a small human trial did find a cause-and-effect relationship between coffee and reduced insulin resistance, he said. Insulin resistance is a warning sign of diabetes.
Balancing good elements
Coffee can be part of a healthy diet, but people shouldn't look to it as a way to prevent type 2 diabetes, Hu said. "People should still watch their weight and be physically active," he added.
Like Hu, other experts aren't ready to advise patients to up their coffee intake just yet.
"It appears from the study that coffee can protect at least certain populations from developing type 2 diabetes," said Dr Joel Zonszein, director of the Clinical Diabetes Centre at Montefiore Medical Centre in New York City.
"However, as with everything else, the message is not drinking coffee to prevent diabetes, but rather balancing all good elements in life so they can all be used and consumed with moderation," he said.
Weight loss and exercise
Dr Spyros Mezitis, an endocrinologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said a drawback of the study is that the data was all self-reported by the participants.
"You don't know if they are telling the truth," he said.
Moreover, weight loss and exercise are more effective ways to reduce diabetes risk than drinking more coffee, Mezitis said.
"I am not recommending that anyone drink coffee to prevent diabetes," he said.
For the study, Hu's team collected data from three major US studies: the Nurses' Health studies of 1986-2006 and 1991-2007, and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study of 1986-2006.
Study participants completed questionnaires every four years that included their coffee and tea intake. Overall, 7 269 cases of type 2 diabetes were reported.
Loaded with sugar and cream
The researchers calculated that people who increased their coffee consumption by more than one cup a day for four years reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the next four years by 11% compared with those who didn't boost their daily coffee intake.
However, people who drank at one less cup of coffee or more daily over the four years had a 17 % higher risk for diabetes in the subsequent four years, the researchers said.
Hu's group defined a cup of coffee as 8 ounces of coffee, black or with a small amount of milk and/or sugar. Drinking coffee loaded with sugar or cream may reduce any benefit coffee may have in reducing diabetes risk, Hu said.
The findings only applied to caffeinated coffee. Decaffeinated coffee and caffeinated tea weren't associated with changes in risk for type 2 diabetes, the researchers said.
Dr Alyson Myers, an endocrinologist at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, said coffee alone might not account for the reduced diabetes risk.
"It is unclear if the extra cup of coffee may cause these patients to eat less, as they may become full faster," she said.
Noting that the study consisted of health care professionals, Myers said the results might not reflect the entire population. Also, the study doesn't address physical activity. "Perhaps those who drank caffeinated coffee had the energy to work out more," she said.
5 Things NOT to do when planning your wedding
1. Leaving your partner out of the picture
One of biggest aspects you need to consider when it comes to arranging a wedding (if you're not hiring an actual planner), is the amount of time, energy and effort it takes.
From working out a budget and choosing a venue, to compiling the guest list and deciding on a specific menu, hashing out the nitty-gritty of making wedding arrangements requires collective and collaborative input.
And we’re not just talking about vendor and extended family assistance here.
Some brides get so caught up in the process that they not only forget that the day isn’t just about them, but they also end up neglecting their partners completely; something which doesn’t really bode well for a successful partnership in marriage.
One of the best ways you can find out just how well suited you are when it comes to working together, is to plan a big event together.
You don’t have to relinquish the reigns completely (most of the time, most grooms are happy to let the bride to most of the creative organising), but asking for input, advice and dividing some of the tasks amongst you will ensure that your partner feels like he/she’s part of the process and that the stress of preparing for your big day is cut in half.
2. Selecting wedding vendors without asking to see a portfolio
Every bride wants her big day to be absolutely perfect, and one of the best ways to ensure this is to make sure that, if you’re making use of a planner, or any other service provider, you have a portfolio and more than a few references to work with.
In the spirit of capturing every single aspect of the wedding, no bridal couple wants to see décor that’s sloppy, endure catering services that fail to deliver what their exotic menu promises and cringe their way through subpar videography and photography.
When deciding on a vendor, make sure you’ve done your research.
Check to see if they have a website and contact details listed. If they do, browse through sections that offer a glimpse into the kind of service they provide.
Also, go through a few bridal directories to see if they’re listed on more than one directory. The more their names pop up, the more prominent they tend to be.
3. Bottling up all of your negative emotions
It’s ok to be stressed out about your wedding.
Know what’s even more ok?
Is NOT feeling excited about planning your wedding (This bride’s confession will make you feel heaps better in case you’re suffering from wedding planning fatigue).
There’s often a lot of articles that are dedicated to telling brides to either, a) stop stressing about the big day, or b) to stop being a bridezilla. It’s easier said than done though; especially when the advice comes from people who are NOT planning their wedding.
And frankly, telling brides and grooms-to-be how they should feel about planning THEIR wedding is a little presumptuous and rude.
Unless they’re really throwing hissy fits for no good reason (like demanding someone drop their plans without a moment’s notice to accommodate an unimportant request), in which case, you can totally tell them to take a chill pill or two.
Remember wedding planning fatigue does not mean you’re not excited about getting married to the person you love, and snappish, dragon-like behaviour is permitted every once in a while; just make sure it doesn’t extend beyond a few days.
4. Playing the comparison game
We hate to tell you this, but someone else’s wedding is always going to be better than yours. But, you know what?
Your wedding will invariably also be better than someone else’s.
Besides, if you’re focusing on making your wedding day, the bridal banquet of the century, then there might be the teeniest, tiniest chance that you’ve lost sight of the actual reason you’re getting married.
5. Focusing all of your energy on your wedding
Remember the life you had before you started making all sorts of arrangements? Well, you still have that.
Make an effort to spend non-wedding time with your partner (date nights where the big W is not on your agenda at all) and your friends.
It’s a good way to clear your headspace and to let your circle of friends know that they aren’t less important than your up and coming big day.

Theft Scandal! Actress Angela Okorie Vows To Punish Muma Gee's Husband For South African Blackmail!
Emabattled Nollywood actress. Angela Okorie, who was recently involved in a theft scandal over the Easter Holidays, which saw her get arrested and detained in South Africa has blamed it on blackmail.
Angela was in South Africa for a movie shoot ‘Nwa Abakaliki’, went in the company of Muma Gee’s husband, Prince Ekeh, but things got out of hand, and she was remanded in Police Custody for over 24 hours, before here release.
Speaking with Yes! Magazine, Angela bared her mind on the episode, and vowed to get even with Prince Ekeh, who according to her, was instrumental in her arrest.
Here’s her account of what happened in South Africa with Muma Gees’s husband, Prince Ekeh.
“I left Nigeria for South Africa to shoot my movie, Nwa Abakaliki in South Africa on Monday April 7 2014 with Prince Ekeh, Muma Gee’s husband. I paid for his flight and accommodation from Port Harcourt to Lagos and from Lagos to South Africa. Then at a point, I decided to move to a hotel so as to give him space and a friend of mine called M.K said I should come over to her place at North Gate Estate where I can pay less for my accommodation because she has a 3 bedroom flat.
So I moved in and met a friend of mine called Prosper who is actually one of my biggest fans in her place. But he was also living in a separate room with the lady. As time went on, this guy started disturbing me for sex. He said he liked me and would not mind having an affair with me. But I told him I am married with a child but he would not let me be. It got to a stage he went to hire a car to take me around so as to aid my production but I never gave in to his demand for sex.
Then on Good Friday, April 18th, I was in my room and didn’t bother locking my room door. Prosper came in and tried to rape me but I told him that I am ready to kill and go to jail if he ever tried it. After much sweet words and threats, he left me alone and I moved out of the house to Hilton Hotel, Sandton that day.
On Sunday, April 19th, Prince Eke called me that Prosper and some people were coming to meet me at the hotel and I said no problem. Unknown to me, he was coming with about three policemen. I opened the door for them but to my greatest surprise, Prosper said that I stole his 32,000rand which is about $3,200. I was surprised because that to me is ridiculous. How can I steal such money when I paid for Prince Ekeh’s flight and accommodation which amounts to about $4,000 dollars, not to talk of myself? I was taken to Honeydew from where I was moved to Ranburg Police station in Johannesburg on Saturday April 19th and was released the following day, being April 20, 2014, Easter Sunday.
Why I am sad about the whole blackmail is that it was after my release that I got to know that Prosper’s job in South Africa is to con and defraud new Nigerians in S.A. He would identify strangers who have come with money for a project and offer to assist. Afterwards, he would call the policemen who are also working with him to defraud the innocent people, claiming to have done something for them or that they stole his money. He picked on me because he knows I am a celebrity and would not want to soil my name.
I was seriously embittered when I later learnt that Prince Ekeh harboured him in the house I left for him to stay and that he was on the run because I vowed to take the matter in the law court for defamation of character. When the issue became serious, they started begging me, sending different set of people to beg me but I promised to show them the other side of me because I have not been able to complete my movies since then. Prince Ekeh was even threatening to shoot me; that why would I be telling my friends about the incident and also queried the policemen who gave me my passport.
Prince is an ingrate. I paid for his ticket from Port Harcourt to Lagos and from Lagos to South Africa to help him and his family because his wife, Muma Gee has been the only one assisting his career and all he could pay me with is this cheap blackmail. He was not even happy that my passport was released to me. I keep asking myself why? What does he want to achieve? Anyway, I have told him and his accomplice who tried to rape and blackmail me that I am taking this up in a reputable law court”

Nigerian Officials Banned 'Half Of A Yellow Sun' Movie Because Of Biafran War
The most awaited movie of this year in Nigeria, “Half of a Yellow Sun,” has been banned by the country's film censorship board because the movie partially takes place during the Biafran War.
According to the director, Biyi Bandele, the movie scheduled to open in Nigeria last Friday was essentially banned as the country’s film censorship board has refused to issue the movie a certificate. Earlier, Half of a Yellow Sun's premier has been postponed in Nigeria.
Though, the movie which is unites some of Nigeria’s major cultural figures of civil war (also known as the Biafran War) is already showing in Britain and is scheduled to open in the United States next month. It also had its premiere last year at the Toronto International Film Festival. And Nigerian actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who starred in the Academy Award-winning film “12 Years a Slave” is one of the stars in the movie. The censorship board could not be reached for comment about the film, but Mr. Bandele said officials seemed to be “jittery about its content.” He continued: “That it deals with the Biafran War (from 1967 to 1970). That it might incite people to violence.” Even today a remnant of the old Igbo independence movement persists in the country’s south, which is largely Christian. And in the north, where Muslims are in the majority, many people attribute the Nigerian Army’s frequent large-scale killings of civilians, in its campaign against the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram, to southerners’ lingering fury over their treatment during the long-ago war.
On Friday, Mr. Bandele denounced what he characterized as a blatant attempt to suppress discussion about a crucial if painful episode in Nigeria’s coming-of-age. “It is seriously shocking that someone would presume to be this arbiter of what Nigerians want and don’t want to see,” he said. Mr. Bandele suggested that the war remains largely taboo in the country’s classrooms, making his film all the more important as a discussion point. “To say the way to heal is not to talk about it is disingenuous,” he said.
The civil war is the central episode in Ms. Adichie’s ambitious book, which is widely available in Nigeria. Yet the real subject is less the war itself than its formative stages — a sweeping portrayal of Nigeria’s nouveaux riches, pan-Africanist intellectuals, colonial remnants, and an increasingly belligerent officer caste. Mr. Bandele said his film was faithful to that orientation as well. Yet the large-screen portrayal of violence, at a time when real-life violence has dominated the country’s newspapers and airwaves, appears to have touched a nerve.
Nigeria is now traversing an especially unsettled and anxious period, with frequent killings of civilians by Boko Haram — a bombing in the capital, Abuja, last week killed at least 75 people — and the unsolved kidnappings of schoolgirls in the north. “We went out of our way to reassure the government that we were not trying to stir up trouble,” Mr. Bandele said. “The ironies in this are just so many. It is just surreal.”

Abducted Schoolgirls Allegedly Married Off To Boko Haram Members For N2,000
Over 200 students of the Government Girls College abducted by the Boko Haram sects on April 14, 2014 in Borno reported earlier today to have been ferried to neighbouring countries like Chad and Cameroon are said to be married off to the terrorists at the price of N2000.
This was made known by a leader of the Chibok Elders Forum, Dr. Pogu Bitrus who said:
“They ferried them in canoes to Cameroon and Chad republic after they were wedded off to Boko Haram members who bidded (sic) and paid N2,000 each as dowries on their heads."
“The dowry was paid to their captors, the very people who abducted them from their school. One of them who married one of the girls took her to a border town close to Cameroon where villagers saw her.”
The Boko Haram members who have assumed “ownership” of the students were reported to have initially kept the girls at the Boko Haram camps in the notorious Sambisa Forest, then relocated them in trucks to other locations following the battle they had with the Military who had stormed the forest in search of the girls where over 40 insurgents were killed.
Bitrus who also said sources in Cameroon revealed most of the girls were now being held at “an area where the Boko Haram operates in Cameroon was in tears while speaking to Daily trust urged all Nigerians to join in the search of these missing girls.
He said: “If these captors are trying to achieve a political point, I think the best thing is for us to try to make sure that they don’t succeed but from all indications they are succeeding due to inaction of government. It is helping these people in achieving their objectives.”
Meanwhile the parents of the abducted girls who had expressed their fear that their children will be married out forcefully to their abductors have given President Jonathan an ultimatum to rescue the girls.

Fulani Herdsmen Are Not Killers But Victims, Elder Statesman Declares
In spite of several deadly attacks carried out in the middle belt of Nigeria which were blamed on the Fulani herdsmen, an elder statesman, Professor Jubril Muhammad Aminu, has absolved the herdsmen of any wrongdoing.
The former Senator and ex-ambassador, an indigene of Adamawa State, said the herdsmen are rather victims in this case.
According to an interview he granted to Vanguard newspaper, the professor of cardiology said the federal government should be blamed for the attacks, noting that unless something is done urgently to curb Boko Haram attacks in the country, insurgency will not end.
Aminu said an average Fulani man is presently bearing the brunt of dictatorial rule of the Fulani has painted by history.
He noted that during colonial rule, there were cattle routes and the Fulani herdsman goes about his business without stepping on toes.
“They used to have cattle routes in the days of the British in the first republic. You have cattle routes everywhere. And no farmer will come to farm on these routes.
